Start an under-sink filter shortlist with two decisions. Which concern must it address, and will it use a dedicated drinking-water faucet or the existing cold-water faucet? Those answers are more useful than counting cartridges in a product photo.
Check the manufacturer’s service clearance, not just whether the unit fits inside the cabinet today. A garbage disposal or shelf can make replacements awkward. Include installation work and future access in the comparison.

Aquasana Claryum Direct Connect is an example for researching a connection to an existing cold-water faucet. Use the manufacturer’s page and current instructions to check compatibility and supported claims. A direct connection is an installation distinction. It doesn’t by itself prove a particular contaminant result.
These are research suggestions, not a ranked winner and runner-up. Their inclusion reflects that their manufacturers provide identifiable documentation for the arrangements being discussed. We have not installed or independently tested either product.
Compare the faucet arrangements
A dedicated faucet makes the treated outlet easy to identify, but it can require an appropriate installation location and additional work. An existing-faucet arrangement has different connection and use questions. Ask the installer to explain the proposed route rather than treating either arrangement as universally easier.

A renter should discuss permitted modifications with the owner before equipment is bought. A homeowner should also ask whether any plumbing work belongs with a licensed professional under local requirements. The manufacturer’s procedure and the site conditions control the task, not a general photograph of a cabinet.
Verify the claim before comparing flow
Use the certification body’s listing for the complete model and relevant reduction claim. NSF explains that standards address different purposes. Don’t interpret a standard number as a quality ranking or assume that a mark covers every substance mentioned in a retailer’s description.
Then examine delivery under the manufacturer’s specified conditions. Ask how the model fits the household’s intended use and whether the design accounts for existing plumbing conditions. A demonstration with one glass doesn’t replace the relevant model information.
If the objective is a specific contaminant reduction, ask an appropriate laboratory or professional how to check the result. A taste comparison can describe a preference. It can’t establish the outcome of a health-related claim.
Price the service space as well as the cartridges
Request the exact permitted replacement parts, current prices and service triggers. Add installation work and any professional labor needed for later service as separate lines. Don’t borrow another model’s six-month schedule because the cartridges look similar.
Check the required clearance for cartridge removal and access to service points. The unit still needs to be serviceable when the cabinet is full of ordinary household items.
Save a stage map, manual and receipt with the installation record. A replacement note should identify the component changed and the checks completed, rather than just saying “filter done.”
Decide when RO deserves a separate comparison
