The bigger picture
A thoughtful starting point.
A conventional ion-exchange softener addresses hardness. That makes it different from treatment aimed at a particular drinking-water contaminant. A softer feel or reduced scale does not verify that every water-quality concern has been resolved.
Bring a measured starting point
Record incoming hardness and its units before requesting a design. Ask how the proposed equipment accounts for operating capacity, household demand, relevant water chemistry, and regeneration requirements. Do not use a regional map as a substitute for your own measurement.
For products described as “salt-free,” ask which outcome is claimed and how it is verified. A scale-management claim is not automatically a claim of hardness removal. Our guide below explains the distinctions and the responsibilities that come with a conventional system.
