The bigger picture
A thoughtful starting point.
There is no single system that is best for every water source and every concern. A meaningful comparison begins with the job each option would need to perform.
Softener or filter?
A conventional softener reduces hardness. A filter’s purpose depends on its design and specific performance claims. They are not interchangeable categories, and a hardness solution is not a blanket claim of drinking-water safety.
Whole-house or point-of-use?
Whole-house treatment sits near the entry of the supply and can affect water used across the home. Point-of-use treatment, including many under-sink RO systems, addresses water at a particular location. The right scope depends on the concern and the relevant uses of the water.
Use the same checklist for both proposals
- Target problem and supporting test result.
- Exact model and verified reduction claim.
- Rated flow and operating conditions.
- Installation requirements and included work.
- Maintenance, consumables, and service responsibilities.
- How performance will be checked.
Keep the certification record and itemized budget alongside the proposal. Compare what each system actually promises under its stated conditions rather than counting stages or features.
