Compare the same scope
Two quotes. One clear worksheet.
Enter USD amounts from your proposals. Include each cost once. Leave an unknown amount blank; enter 0 only when you have confirmed there is no charge.
Your two entered-cost subtotals will appear here.
Arithmetic comparison only. Price changes, financing, unknown repairs and unentered charges are excluded. It does not assess treatment suitability, performance or warranty value. Entries are not saved or sent.
Make the numbers useful
Use the tool with confidence.
Start with matching requirements
Write down the water concern and the outlets the equipment is meant to serve. A drinking-water filter at one faucet and a whole-house system are different jobs. Keep the exact model and relevant performance documentation with each quote. A lower number cannot tell you whether either proposal addresses your water results.
Use the quote comparison guide to check the equipment and installation scope before entering the amounts. Include any confirmed plumbing, electrical work, permits, old-equipment removal and applicable charges in the upfront total. Ask the provider to clarify exclusions instead of guessing their price.
Separate recurring and irregular costs
Add the recurring expenses you expect in one year: applicable cartridges, salt, scheduled labor or other documented consumables. Enter their combined annual amount. The worksheet repeats that amount for the selected period, so use it as a stated assumption rather than a prediction of future prices.
Put known irregular costs in the other-cost field as one total across the whole period. If a cartridge is already included in annual service, do not add it again. Likewise, a prepaid visit included in the upfront quote belongs in that amount once. Leave unknown amounts blank until you can clarify them; a confirmed zero and an unanswered question are different.
For example, an illustrative option costing $1,500 upfront, $200 each year and $100 in other costs has a five-year entered subtotal of $2,600. That example is arithmetic, not a current market price or product recommendation. Financing, price changes and unknown repairs require separate consideration.
Read the service terms beside the price
Record included labor, consumables, visit fees, exclusions and the company responsible for support in the notes. A service contract may differ from the manufacturer’s warranty or the installer’s workmanship terms. The FTC’s service-contract guidance recommends checking costs, coverage and the claims process. Our water-treatment service-contract guide applies those questions to equipment proposals.
Print the comparison for a provider conversation
Calculate the subtotals, review the included work and print the worksheet. Take unresolved questions back to the providers and update the comparison after receiving written answers. The printable view includes the proposal names, costs, notes and current results. These entries stay in your browser while the page is open; the tool does not save them, send them or pick a product.
Before you decide
Practical questions, answered.
Does the lower total mean a better water-treatment system?
No. The worksheet compares only entered costs. Check that each proposal addresses your water results, serves the same outlets and includes the work you need. Review equipment claims, exclusions and service terms separately.
What should I enter for an unknown cost?
Leave it blank and ask the provider to confirm it. The calculator needs all cost fields before it can compare the totals. Enter zero only when you have confirmed that there is no charge.
Can I save the comparison as a PDF?
Yes. After calculating, select Print comparison and choose Save as PDF in your browser print dialog. If you change an input, compare again before printing.
Does this calculator include financing or future price increases?
No. It repeats the annual amount you enter for the selected period. Financing, price changes, unknown repairs and unentered charges are excluded.
Does HandyTrail save my entries?
No. The tool does not send your entries to HandyTrail or save them between visits. Keep your own copy of any result you need.
