About this topic

With a private well, routine testing is the owner’s responsibility. Clear water and a familiar taste don’t replace it.

Start with annual testing

CDC recommends testing at least annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. Ask your local health department which additional tests matter in your area. Flooding, repairs, or a change in the water may call for earlier testing.

Use our well testing guide to plan the sample. If you’re also seeing rusty stains or noticing an odor, investigate those without dropping the wider testing routine.

Give each treatment stage a job

A well-water system should connect the results, household demand, and manufacturer requirements. Ask a qualified provider to explain that connection and include follow-up testing. Equipment inside the house doesn’t repair a problem at the well.
